Streetworks NRSWA training at Utilities Training Limited gives operatives and supervisors the skills to work safely on public highways. We deliver this course in line with the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991 (NRSWA). As a result, learners understand their legal responsibilities, apply safe systems of work, and protect both workers and the public during street works.

What NRSWA Training Covers

Our Street Works training covers essential topics needed for safe highway operations. Learners complete training in signing, lighting and guarding (SLG), excavation techniques, backfilling, and reinstatement. In addition, they learn how to manage traffic and maintain safe working areas.

Furthermore, learners follow guidance from the Safety at Street Works and Road Works Code of Practice. Therefore, they meet industry standards and reduce disruption to road users and pedestrians. This practical approach helps improve efficiency and compliance on-site.

Hazard Awareness and Risk Control

We place strong focus on hazard awareness and risk assessment throughout the course. Learners identify dangers such as underground services, unstable ground conditions, and live traffic. In addition, they apply control measures to reduce risks and maintain safe environments.

As a result, learners improve workplace safety and deliver consistent, high-quality work. This training supports both the utilities and construction sectors by building competence and reducing incidents.

Operative streetworks training is designed for those carrying out the physical tasks on site. It focuses on hands-on skills such as excavation, reinstatement, and the correct placement of signage and barriers. Operatives are trained to follow safe working practices, use equipment correctly, and work efficiently while maintaining compliance with legal and industry requirements.

Supervisor streetworks training is aimed at those responsible for overseeing works on site. It covers planning, monitoring, and ensuring that all activities are carried out safely and in line with regulations. Supervisors learn how to manage teams, carry out inspections, and ensure that works meet the required standards for safety, quality, and compliance.

The full streetworks qualification framework is made up of 16 units, covering both operative and supervisor roles. These include units for signing, lighting and guarding; excavation in the highway; reinstatement and compaction of backfill materials; reinstatement of sub-base and roadbase in both flexible and rigid constructions; and reinstatement of cold-lay and hot-lay bituminous materials. Additional units cover modular surfaces such as block paving and concrete slabs, as well as monitoring and overseeing works for supervisors, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of all aspects of streetworks operations.
