The Smart Awards SA001 Overhead Safety training provides an industry-recognised qualification for anyone working on or around ladders and wooden poles in an overhead telecommunications environment.
At our North West training centre, we deliver this practical, hands-on course to build your skills and confidence. As a result, you will learn how to work safely at height on external networks while meeting current health and safety legislation, industry best practices, and Smart Awards standards.
What You Will Learn
During the course, you will gain a clear understanding of the key hazards and control measures involved in overhead telecoms work. In particular, you will learn how to:
Operate safely on joint user poles where power and telecoms share structures

Work safely at height using approved techniques
Access and descend poles safely with ladders
Inspect pole condition before climbing
Course Structure
The SA001 programme includes three core modules. Each module builds essential knowledge and practical skills to help you work safely and confidently.
1. Overhead Safety
First, you will focus on identifying and managing risks in overhead environments. You will:
- Identify hazards and assess risks in a work area
- Apply safe systems of work and site controls
- Use correct manual handling techniques when moving ladders and equipment
- Select and use PPE and fall prevention or fall arrest equipment correctly
- Follow relevant health and safety legislation and telecoms industry standards
2. Pole Checking
Next, you will learn how to assess whether a pole is safe to climb. This module enables you to:
- Read and interpret pole markings and safety labels
- Assess pole condition and identify defects
- Decide whether a pole is safe to use or needs reporting
- Record and communicate safety concerns effectively
3. Joint User Poles
Finally, you will understand how to work safely around shared infrastructure. You will:
- Recognise the additional risks associated with electrical utilities
- Maintain safe minimum approach distances
- Apply safe working practices near power infrastructure
- Follow correct escalation and reporting procedures when hazards arise
Certification
After successfully completing the course, you will receive the Smart Awards SA001 Overhead Safety accreditation. Typically, this certification remains valid for three years. After that, you must complete a refresher course to maintain compliance and stay up to date with industry standards.
