1b, 3a & 3b, PAV, MEWP For Managers & Harness Training
Our expert instructors combine hands-on practical training with essential theory to ensure every delegate leaves confident, competent, and fully compliant with health and safety regulations and proper use of Mobile Elevating Working Platforms.
IPAF 1b Static Boom
IPAF 1b machines are static boom platforms that move vertically and do not allow driving while elevated. Operators use these platforms on vehicles or trailers, including van-mounted cherry pickers and truck-mounted platforms. These machines support tasks such as maintenance, installation, and inspection work at height.
Operators must set up and stabilise the platform before use, usually with outriggers. This setup ensures safe working at height and prevents movement during operation. As a result, operators can work securely and maintain full control of the equipment.
IPAF 1b training covers essential skills needed for safe operation. Learners carry out pre-use safety checks and understand correct positioning and stability. They learn how to operate static booms, truck-mounted platforms, and spider lifts. In addition, the course develops knowledge of hazards, risks, and safe working practices, helping operators improve safety and meet health and safety compliance requirements.
IPAF Category 3a – Mobile Vertical (Scissor Lifts
IPAF 3a training teaches operators how to safely use mobile vertical MEWPs, including scissor lifts that can drive while elevated. The International Powered Access Federation approves this course and sets the standards for safe operation.
Learners complete both theory training and practical training to build strong skills and confidence. The course covers health and safety regulations, hazard awareness, pre-use inspections, and machine controls. Operators also learn correct safe operating procedures to reduce risks and improve workplace safety.
Candidates complete a theory test and a practical assessment at the end of the course. Successful learners receive an IPAF PAL Card, which proves competence and remains valid for five years. This qualification helps operators meet compliance requirements and work safely at height.
IPAF Category 3b – Mobile Boom (Cherry Pickers)
IPAF 3b training teaches operators how to safely use mobile boom MEWPs (Mobile Elevating Work Platforms), including self-propelled boom lifts and cherry pickers. These machines allow movement while elevated and extend both vertically and horizontally, making them ideal for working at height tasks.
The International Powered Access Federation accredits this course and sets the standards for safe operation. Learners complete theory and practical training to build real-world skills and confidence. The course covers health and safety regulations, hazard awareness, risk assessment, pre-use inspections, and machine controls. Operators also learn correct safe operating procedures and how to carry out emergency lowering.
Candidates complete a theory test and a practical assessment to demonstrate competence. Successful learners receive an IPAF PAL Card, which remains valid for five years. This qualification helps operators meet compliance requirements, improve workplace safety, and operate MEWPs safely on-site.
IPAF Harness User/Inspector
IPAF Harness User & Inspector training teaches workers how to correctly use, inspect, and maintain safety harnesses and lanyards when working at height, particularly when operating MEWPs. The course, accredited by the International Powered Access Federation, includes theory and practical training covering types of harnesses and lanyards, correct fitting and adjustment, anchor points, hazard awareness, pre-use and detailed inspections, record keeping, and identifying damage or wear. Participants complete a theory and practical assessment, and successful candidates receive an IPAF certificate, demonstrating their competence in the safe use and inspection of harness equipment.
IPAF Spotter
IPAF spotter training gives learners the skills to safely guide and support MEWP operators. The International Powered Access Federation sets the standards for this course. It focuses on clear communication, hazard awareness, and safe movement of equipment.
Learners understand their role as the operator’s eyes on the ground. They identify risks, control site hazards, and protect pedestrians. They also help prevent collisions in busy or confined work environments. This training improves workplace safety and supports smooth site operations.
The course combines theory training with practical scenarios to build real-world skills. Learners practise guiding equipment and communicating effectively with operators. This approach reinforces safe working practices and builds confidence on-site. Choose IPAF spotter training to reduce risk and improve safety standards. This course is completed online via e-learning.
IPAF MEWPS for Managers
IPAF MEWPs for Managers training is designed for supervisors, managers, and those responsible for planning and overseeing work involving Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs). The course, accredited by the International Powered Access Federation, provides the knowledge needed to safely select, manage, and supervise MEWP operations. Training includes topics such as relevant health and safety legislation, risk assessments and method statements, selecting the correct MEWP for the task, site safety considerations, operator responsibilities, and accident prevention. The course concludes with a theory assessment, and successful candidates receive an IPAF certificate, confirming their understanding of safe MEWP management practices.
Assessment & Certification
Each machine or harness category includes:
- A written/theory test (can be completed via e-learning at home, in advance)
- Practical operating test
MEWPS for Managers is an eLearning course
Successful delegates receive the IPAF PAL Card (Powered Access Licence), valid for 5 years, along with an IPAF Certificate and registration on the IPAF database.
