1b, 3a & 3b, PAV, MEWP For Managers & Harness Training

Our expert instructors combine hands-on practical training with essential theory to ensure every delegate leaves confident, competent, and fully compliant with health and safety regulations and proper use of Mobile Elevating Working Platforms.

IPAF 1b Static Boom

IPAF 1b machines are static vertical access platforms that move straight up and down only and cannot be driven while elevated. They are usually vehicle-mounted or trailer-mounted platforms, such as van-mounted cherry pickers, and are commonly used for tasks like maintenance, installation, and inspection work at height. The platform must be set up and stabilised before use, typically using outriggers.

Training Includes: Pre-use safety checks, Safe Positioning and stability principles, Operation of static booms, truck mounts and spiders, understanding hazards, risks and safe working practices.

IPAF Category 3a – Mobile Vertical (Scissor Lifts

IPAF 3a training teaches operators how to safely use mobile vertical MEWPs, such as scissor lifts that can be driven while elevated. The course, approved by the International Powered Access Federation, includes both theory and practical training, covering health and safety regulations, hazard awareness, pre-use inspections, machine controls, and safe operating procedures. Participants must complete a theory test and practical assessment, and successful candidates receive an IPAF PAL Card, which is valid for five years.

IPAF Category 3b – Mobile Boom (Cherry Pickers)

IPAF 3b training covers the safe operation of mobile boom Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs), such as self-propelled boom lifts and cherry pickers that can be driven while elevated and allow the platform to extend both vertically and horizontally. The course, accredited by the International Powered Access Federation, includes theory and practical training covering health and safety regulations, hazard awareness, risk assessment, pre-use inspections, machine controls, safe operating procedures, and emergency lowering. Participants must pass a theory test and practical assessment, and successful candidates are issued an IPAF PAL Card, which is valid for five years.

IPAF Harness User/Inspector

IPAF Harness User & Inspector training teaches workers how to correctly use, inspect, and maintain safety harnesses and lanyards when working at height, particularly when operating MEWPs. The course, accredited by the International Powered Access Federation, includes theory and practical training covering types of harnesses and lanyards, correct fitting and adjustment, anchor points, hazard awareness, pre-use and detailed inspections, record keeping, and identifying damage or wear. Participants complete a theory and practical assessment, and successful candidates receive an IPAF certificate, demonstrating their competence in the safe use and inspection of harness equipment.

IPAF Spotter

The IPAF spotter training course is designed to equip individuals with the knowledge and practical skills needed to safely guide and assist operators of Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs). Delivered in line with standards set by the International Powered Access Federation, the course focuses on key responsibilities such as maintaining clear communication with the operator, identifying hazards on the ground, and ensuring safe movement of equipment in busy or confined work environments. Participants learn how to act as the operator’s “eyes on the ground,” helping to prevent collisions, protect pedestrians, and reduce the risk of accidents. The training typically combines theory with real-world scenarios, reinforcing best practices and promoting a strong culture of safety on construction and industrial sites.

IPAF MEWPS for Managers

IPAF MEWPs for Managers training is designed for supervisors, managers, and those responsible for planning and overseeing work involving Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs). The course, accredited by the International Powered Access Federation, provides the knowledge needed to safely select, manage, and supervise MEWP operations. Training includes topics such as relevant health and safety legislation, risk assessments and method statements, selecting the correct MEWP for the task, site safety considerations, operator responsibilities, and accident prevention. The course concludes with a theory assessment, and successful candidates receive an IPAF certificate, confirming their understanding of safe MEWP management practices.

Assessment & Certification

Each machine or harness category includes:

  • A written/theory test (can be completed via e-learning at home, in advance)
