Course Outline
This is a physical course that combines practical and theory-based learnings. Sessions include confined space entry and simulation in one of our custom-built medium-risk confined spaces (tunnels, shafts, gas works, and more), combined with classroom-based tutorials to prepare delegates for a final examination at the end of day two.
Our occupation-specific trainers will coach delegates over the two-day course, finishing with a practical observation and short answer question paper assessment. They must pass both elements of the course to qualify.
Course Programme
In this comprehensive course, delegates will cover working in a medium-risk confined space and the duties of an entry controller, with topics such as pre-entry procedures, entry into and exit from the confined space, maintaining communications and initiating and controlling emergency procedures.
The course content includes;
- Current legislation associated with medium-risk confined space work
- How to recognise and classify a medium-risk confined space
- Producing and overseeing Safe Systems of Work (SSOW) for entry into confined spaces, including point of works risk assessment
- How to use personal protective equipment, for example, harnesses and access equipment that workers may require for entry
- The roles and responsibilities of medium-risk entrants and medium-risk entry controllers
- Understanding the roles and responsibilities of others that may be associated with the medium-risk confined space work
- Types and safe use of atmospheric monitoring equipment
- Types and safe use of escape breathing apparatus
- Recognising diseases and understanding the necessary personal hygiene requirements associated with medium-risk confined spaces
- The necessary manning levels - delegates must understand and implement proper working procedures considering their risk assessment
- Why there are periodic examinations of equipment
- Emergency procedures when working in a medium-risk confined space
On Completion
At the end of this course, successful delegates will:
- Summarise the requirements of the confined space regulations, classifications, national standards and other associated legislations
- Understand medium-risk confined spaces and the specific risks they pose
- Assess the suitability of workers entering confined spaces (medium risk)
- Appropriately use personal protective equipment, including harnesses and access equipment
- Recognise diseases and understand the necessary personal hygiene requirements associated with confined spaces
- Determine roles and responsibilities for medium-risk confined space work
- Carry out complete control procedures for such an entry, ensuring the completion of all relevant documentation (RAMS, POWRA, PTW and Rescue Plans etc.)
- Select and check equipment (access equipment, gas detection, comms, and EBA) required to establish an SSOW for Confined Space Entry and working (up to medium-risk level)
- Implement "Emergency Actions" where necessary, including the control of the area, deployment of emergency teams and liaising with emergency services
- Close down a medium-risk confined space entry, ensuring the completion and filing of relevant documentation
